concept

Imagined out of the ordinary objects considered strange or interesting because they originated in a distant foreign place.

These paintings are a practice of breaking down elements to create a representational, yet abstract arrangement of shapes. The compositions attempt to suggest a form and describe an emotion, without revealing what happens next.  It is as if all the constructive elements are still busy arranging the objects to be encountered.

I wanted to paint a tribute to the European seafaring spirit and the colourful vibrance of  cultures at the other side of the known world. All starting in this great Dutch city Amsterdam, where I live.

These images intend to purvey homages to past, present and the unknown future.

I draw inspiration from the adventurous spirit of travel and exploration. It is an attempt to show how an abstract form can have balance, and we see it before we know what it is, which makes us think of a number of things at once.

I am attempting a visual language which is made up of elements arranged in a variety of ways.

As an artist I may do whatever I want to interpret my experience, as a scenic artist I work to replicate and communicate a concept as fluently as possible. Here I find my balance of creativity and technical method.

You could describe my style as abstract, when I paint I think of Minimalism, constructivism, obscurism ( ok, I made this one up), De Stijl and of course I take inspiration from the urban experience of Street Art and the art of indigenous cultures.
